Health Care Association

A Washington DC case study

This Health Care Association is an organization acting as the voice for large employers in health care policy and driving market health care change. To better support their employees and the vision for the future of their company, they decided to renovate their office to provide a more modern, flexible, wellness-oriented space that can comfortably welcome guests. Led by a dedicated team, including Kala Fagan, a Senior Designer at OTJ, the project sought to create a workspace that reflected the company’s commitment to health and well-being.

What was the design vision for the space?

In partnership with the company's leadership team, OTJ imagined a place that would weave together functionality, wellness, aesthetics, state-of-the-art technology, and sustainability—all while reflecting the values and needs of the workforce within.

Originally, the office was primarily filled with high panel workstations and private offices, leaving little room for hosting. In order to better accommodate members and visitors, the team added ample hospitality space, notably updating their space to include over 40% guest-centric areas, including an outdoor terrace.

My team worked with OTJ to provide our client furniture that would complement the design intent of the space, meet their budget, and align with WELL certification requirements. We visited the OFS showroom in DC and at that visit the end user team selected items that reflected a blend of comfort and style to support their vision. We are beyond proud of this space and thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience.
- Sarah Gabriel, Washington Workplace
The client overwhelmingly loved OFS’ ancillary selection because of the mix of comfort and aesthetics, so we made sure to include it throughout the space.
- Kala Fagan, Sr. Designer, OTJ Architects

They included a mix of collaborative spaces, private offices, workstations, conference rooms, and cafe space throughout, creating flexible options. They also included extensive technology, but kept a minimalistic design so that upon entry of any room, the tech would be noticeably integrated into the space design.

For the color palette, the team included soft creams and off-whites, adding striking black and bronze details as well as a classic blue hue in patterns and saturations. Kala Fagan described the vision, saying,

We worked closely with Washington Workplace to select finishes and textiles that would be calming and high class—creating a space that they wouldn’t have to think about, but that would naturally fit their needs.

How did the team support employee wellness through design?

The team is pursuing WELL Gold on the project, a demonstration of their commitment to employee wellbeing. Kala Fagan noted the company’s unwavering support throughout the process, saying,

Our client’s existing progressive policies and culture made them an ideal champion for WELL certification. Our design solutions are inspired by the values of this human-centric organization and serve as a vehicle to amplify those values through the built environment.
- Kala Fagan, OTJ Architects

Aside from their overall vision to pursue this goal, the team also incorporated extensive wellness elements into their space such as respite rooms, added biophilia, enhanced acoustics, a beautiful cafe space, and a variety of workspaces to accommodate various work styles.

Today, employees constantly talk about the pride and comfort they feel when coming into the office. With members from Fortune 500 companies and guests from prominent industry organizations, staff feel excited to welcome their members into the office, knowing it is a reflection of their brand and vision for the company.
